Macular Degeneration
quite simply ~ is an eye disorder that damages the center of the retina
causing gradual deterioration in focus in the central field of vision
unless you have the condition
it is extremely difficult to know what it is like to live with everyday
*
{it is a condition that hits close to home for me ~
since my own mother & grandmother have been diagnosed with this disease}
*
UK artist Adam Hahn was inspired by his own grandmother who experienced it ~
but never talked about what she saw
*
so with the assistance of The London Project to Cure Blindness
he spent time with patients suffering from the condition
& interviewed them about how they saw the world
he gathered data at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology
& used his research to direct these paintings “Portraits of Macular Degeneration”
to hear from adam & some of his subjects about this project ~ watch this:
*
although there is no known way to prevent macular degeneration
lifestyle factors can reduce your risk of developing the condition:
- don’t smoke
- eat a healthy diet that is high in fruits and vegetables and low in animal fat
- exercise regularly
- maintain a healthy weight
- protect eyes from sunlight
- take specialized eye vitamins
see your eye care professional regularly for dialated eye exams!!
take the amsler grid test – a chart that helps doctors detect vision problems associated with macular degeneration

My advice is to wear sunglasses and take your vitamins and if it is in your family take eye vitamins.
Adam, your Portraits of Macular Degeneration is a fantastic work of art and education. There is nothing like “seeing” what others are (or are not) seeing to help others understand the seriousness of age related macular degeneration (AMD).
Thank you for using your creative and artistic abilities to help others understand better what AMD is all about.
