i love stained glass windows
& was mesmerized by the one in this story
on cbs sunday morning…
the eldridge street synagogue in nyc’s lower east side
commissioned avant-garde artist kiki smith & architect deborah gans
to bring a modern design to the synagogue’s east window
during it’s 24 year restoration project.
the blue-and-gold galaxy of stars was inspired
by motifs from the synagogue’s existing 125-year-old Victorian architecture.
The 16-foot circular window is the focal point of the sanctuary…
the six point star is the focus of the design
& each of the six points swirl outward from the star
which is surrounded by more than 12,000 panes
of crystal blue glass sprinkled with tiny gold stars…
See how the window was meticulously created: here
