FlyAway Pigs

A recent custom order for three large paper mache flying pigs. All made from up-cycled newspaper and cardboard; wheat paste, acrylic, magic & love. I was pretty much given free reign to my design but the customer said she like colors like teals & golden yellow. So, I was inspired by space/galaxies, sunrise/sunsets and clouds/blue skies….

Constellations, galaxies, star formations and glow-in-the-dark star clusters are featured on this FlyAway Pig. Plus, silver-lining thread from a comet, and celestial trinkets.

This FlyAway Pig is inspired by many a sunrise and sunset over a scenic lake. I collect sunrises and sunsets – whether via photograph or memory…they inspired the fire red/burnt orange to golden yellow ombre and the sun swirls and fire tendrils of the wings. Sunshine colored threads and strings hold doodads and sun-spired charms.

Sky blues and fluffy-puffy clouds; wings of daydreams and floating in the air magic. A collection fluttery, iridescent trinkets on astral blue strings.

Adjusting Sails

Here is a completed paper mache sailing ship with fabric sails. Up-cycled cereal box, paper bags, newspaper & denim; string, dowels, glue, embroidery & acrylic paint. I will be making more of these. So inspiring to try new techniques as this is based on a pattern/design by my idol, artist Ann Wood. Having one of those weeks…wish it was life size so I could sail away.

Port Bow View

I finally completed the paper mache sailing ship and took it to the lake for a photo shoot. Conditions were perfect for sailing and the jib & boom are strong. Although the little ship is just for display, I believe it was ready to head windward!. Here’s a sneaky peek of the port bow…and that’s all I can show you until it arrives to its home dock. ⚓

Rockin’ Tin Redux

My young nephew collects little rocks he finds on his walks and wanderings {as many that can fit in his tiny hand}. I have a multitude of Altoids tins that have been collecting dust in the studio waiting for their up-cycled second life.  So, I thought I’d {finally} re-purpose a couple them and make him collection boxes to keep his rock treasures all together and handy.

Altoids Tin Redux

It’s super easy to apply an air dry or self hardening clay directly to the top and sides. I used my paper mache clay made from recycled newspaper and cardboard. Allow to dry as is, or add words & whatnots with clay stamps. I tried to make these look like rocks themselves with texturing and paint.Rock Collection Boxes

Add some velvety fabric or flocked paper with a glue gun. This is beneficial for muffling the sound of rocks in a metal tin{which makes parents happy} and looks like a fancy display case when open.

Rock Collection Boxes

Be careful not to apply paper or fabric on the edges of the top of the tin as it won’t close properly {true story}. Now, to get rid of the writing on the outside of the tin, I tried everything I had {from nail polish remover to paint thinner} PLUS everything Mr. D had {mineral oil to auto solvents} and nothing worked. So, you can paint the outside or simply sand the lettering off with a fine sandpaper. This makes it look a little worn and rustic. Viola! Simple, up-cycled collector boxes.

dream elephant

I’m excited to finally share this recent project with you. It was a labor of love designed for a baby’s room. It’s approximately 14″ x 17″ with canvas and frame. For the elephant, clouds, balloons & stars – paper mache clay creates a 3-D effect. Painted with acrylic paints.Dream Elephant by OliveLoaf Design

I first sketched out the concept so I had a clear vision to follow as I created the piece.

For fun I added semi-hidden words that were made from alphabet pasta! So cute. The elephant holds balloons attached to shiny paper string.
